Between figs and futures
Medium
Drypoint etching
Size
16in x 10.5in
This etching, inspired by Sylvia Plath's fig tree from The Bell Jar, explores the delicate balance required when choosing a life path. Plath’s imagery illustrates the challenge of selecting one fig—one future—at the expense of the others, symbolizing how life often demands choices that leave other possibilities behind. My etching has four different windows growing beside a fig tree. Each window depicts a different facet inspired by my own interests. One shows a figure donning makeup, representing my social dimension. Another portrays a woman with her husband, representing the domestic dimension; yet, the cocktail signifies my refusal to abandon other joys. The third window features kickboxing, a pursuit I refuse to relinquish. Finally, the fourth window shows writing, symbolizing my love for reading and storytelling. This artwork is a testament to my varied interests and ambitions, highlighting how life’s choices can coexist and intertwine.
