Unconventional She

Medium

Mixed media- Photography and Digital media

This piece is a hyperbolic representation of gender norms and societal expectations. Inspired by the Pop Art movement, particularly Andy Warhol’s work and its critique of the banality of everyday life, I sought to represent how certain activities take on the valences of gender and become “duties.” Stereotypes often dictate how we perceive things and actions, and “Unconventional She” showcases how we qualify things as masculine and feminine despite the lack of relation to any gender. The contrast between the figure which uses warm colors against the vivid backgrounds is a testament to how women feel out of place. The word "Rogue" is a play on Vogue, with the pastiche as a vehicle for my critique of how the media, subtly yet formatively, propagates stereotypical associations. It associates the attributes of a rogue person with one who lets gender norms dictate their life.
